TECHNOLOGY PROFILE
1. BRIEF DESCRIPTION OF AGENCY The organization for Research and Extension of Intermediate Technology (OREINT) is a local NGO founded in 1985 and is registered with the Ministry of Development and Economic Planning. The main thrust of the organization is development and environment. OREINT provides technical assistance to worthwhile community initiatives geared towards sustainable development through participatory project design implementation, monitoring and evaluation at the grassroots level. MISSION STATEMENT OREINT’s mission is to empower communities/people in order to develop their potentials for poverty eradication and economic liberation. OBJECTIVES: 1. to support community initiatives geared towards enhancing the living standards of marginalized or poor groups. 2. to promote, support information exchange and the use of appropriate Technology in order to achieve sustainable development at the grassroots level. 3. to raise environmental awareness amongst people/communities and promote the sustainable use of environmental resources. ACTIVITIES: Agriculture Implements inland valley swamp (IVS) development, vegetable gardening, economic trees (crops) plantation. Hands-on skill training i) Plan International Western Urban – coordinated the training of 150 youths (relatives of foster children) in technical/vocational skills such as tailoring carpentry, electrical installation and auto-mechanic for to years. (1995-1997). ii) INTERNATIONAL DEVELOPMENT FUND, SWEDEN Sweden – coordinated training 30 youths in blacksmithing and tin smithing at Kamakwie. Micro-Credit (i) TRICKLE UP PROGRAM- A USA-based micro-credit grant agency, targeting the poorest of the poor. OREINT has been a coordinating agency of this micro-credit project since 1992 and has benefited 250 businesses (ii) SAPA – category ‘A’ implementing partner. Is currently implementing its micro-credit program with Le14,250,000 capital revolving among 80 beneficiaries. Community Development Integrated community development activities. Sensitization campaigns, Environment Environmental education, Community afforestation. Management Training and Supervision Has conducted project management and leadership training to over 24 affiliated CBO’s in Freetown, Port Loko and Bombali districts. Technical Assistance To Other NGOs Provide technical support services on consultancy bases. These services include: (I) Feasibility Studies (ii) Project Monitoring and implementation (iii) Project/Programme evaluation (iv) Development education training. PARTNERS: University of Gottenborg, University of Chalmers, Gottenborg, Sweden. NEEDS: OREINT needs northern and southern NGO partners to work with them in any of the above sectors in the development of its war- torn country. |
